Drug Detox

The treatment of drug addiction may differ depending on which rehab facility you choose, but the first step of treatment in all facilities is always detoxification. A drug detox facility should be first on one’s list when it comes to the treatment of substance abuse or addiction since these facilities are equipped and staffed appropriately.  The people at these facilities are trained and experienced when it comes to drug detox and its accompanying withdrawal symptoms.  These symptoms will be different for each addict depending on an addict’s constitution, what type of drug was taken, how often, and how much.

The biggest concern in drug detox is how to minimize the effect of withdrawal symptoms since these are what usually cause a relapse.  It is worse for long-term drug abusers and those who use or have used several drugs because they will have more and longer lasting symptoms.  Withdrawal symptoms are what drug detox facilities try to minimize because minimizing them means reducing the chances of a relapse.  Some of the most common withdrawal symptoms include:

  • Hallucinations
  • Fever and chills
  • Irritability
  • Mood swings
  • Restlessness
  • Anxiety
  • Depression

The main goal of a drug detox facility is to help an addict cope with withdrawal symptoms and transition to sobriety.  This transition process involves physical, psychological, and emotional aspects, which should also be the case with treatment.  A well-trained drug detox facility will know better and attack addiction in all these fronts.  Also, treatment should be tailored to fit the unique needs of each addict because, although addicts all aim for the same goal of sobriety, they have different needs that need to be addressed appropriately.  To overcome even the worst of withdrawal symptoms, an addict will need to have the will and the dedication to carry him or her through to successful treatment.

Drug detox facilities will make the transition from addiction to sobriety as easy and as comfortable as possible, but successful treatment cannot be achieved alone.  A commitment from the addict and the drug detox facility is required so that treatment can be successful.

Medical Detox Facilities will make the physical symptoms of drug detox a walk in the park.  The withdrawal symptoms associated with detox will still be present, but, with the assistance of trained and experienced addiction treatment professionals, these will be minimal.
