Family Interventions for Addiction

Watching a friend hit rock bottom is a painful sight, but watching a friend hit rock bottom through drug addiction or alcohol abuse is downright devastating.  Most of the time, though, people do not realize there is a problem until it is too late.  Victims of substance abuse or addiction are unwilling to seek help on their own because they do not believe a problem exists. Family interventions for addiction are the best option in helping a person see the problem and overcome it.  In such interventions, it is advisable to seek the assistance of an experienced professional interventionist to oversee the process.

Some people believe that, in order to convince an addict or alcoholic to seek treatment, it is necessary to nag or shame them.  However, this can have an adverse effect in that this method pushes the addict or alcoholic to further substance abuse instead of treatment.  Convincing someone to seek treatment is a very sensitive undertaking and, as such, requires patience and perseverance.  If not done carefully, one can damage an addict’s self-esteem and push him or her to isolation and further substance abuse.

Interventions have been done in the past to help victims of trauma and addiction, and it has shown promise.  Family interventions for addiction have helped thousands through encouraging them to go to drug and alcohol treatment programs or rehab facilities – and stay there until treatment is done.  It is one thing to go to a treatment facility, and another to make the commitment to finish treatment and embrace sobriety for life.  This is where family interventions can help through boosting an addict’s morale and encouraging him to finish treatment, however difficult and challenging the regimen.

Keep in mind that family interventions for addiction are not a cure in itself, but simply a means to guide an addict in the right direction.  In all interventions, it is advisable to have a seasoned interventionist present to ensure that the intervention is conducted properly.
